Whitworth Shop Local Food and Craft Market is based at Hallfold Church in Whitworth on the second Saturday of every month. The Market was set up two years ago by four voluntary members of the Whitworth community. The aim was to bring together local arts, crafts and produce under one roof to enhance community cohesion, leisure and tourism across our town of Whitworth.
The Markets are a not-for-profit organisation, every penny that it generates by the hiring out of stalls, goes into four things: 1) insurance 2) building hire 3) advertising and 4) BACK into the local community.
This year we asked for ten Whitworth based charity, or non funded, organisations to be nominated by the attendees of our Market, we made up boxes with these organisations name on them and bought tokens to put into them. We then asked people whom visited the Markets to pop a token in a box of who they would like to see £100 to go to. If items were purchased from stalls; they got an extra token to pop in a box.
After three months of voting, the top five organisations were:
Whitworth Brownies & Guides, Whitworth After School Club, Whitworth Vale and Healey Youth band, Whitworth Choir and the Keep Whitworth Tidy Group.
A representative from each organisation has been presented with a cheque for £100.00 on Saturday 9th July 2016 from The Committee (Lynn & Ian Knight, Karl Burrill and Naomi Kenyon)
The Markets have gone from strength to strength and it’s been lovely to see so many people through the door over the last two years.
